The Eugene Generals netted their second win in less than ten hours on Saturday evening by defeating the Jersey Shore Whalers, 3-0, at the USPHL Winter Showcase in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
The evening matchup with the Whalers came on the heels of the Generals having defeated the Syracuse Stars, 4-0, earlier in the morning in what was Eugene's first game of the showcase.
After a scoreless first 25 minutes, Eugene broke the stalemate at the 16:46 mark of the second period thanks to Broc Frisen who punched home a loose puck in the Jersey Shore crease to put Eugene ahead, 1-0.
Generals forward Alex Clark later scored his second goal of the day at the 4:52 mark of the second to give Eugene some breathing room, and Clark added an empty-netter with less than 90 seconds left to seal a 3-0 win for the Generals and cap a tiring 2-0-0 day for the Generals.
Generals goaltender Jamie Frantz stopped all 26 shots faced to earn the win, his first shutout of the season and second time of the day that a Generals goaltender had accomplished such a feat. Generals goaltender Christopher Alexakis also netted his first shutout win of the season in Eugene's 4-0 win over the Syracuse Stars earlier in the day. Together, the two Generals goaltenders combined to turn away all 47 opponents shots faced on the day.
“I’m really proud both of our goalies played today,” said Generals Head Coach Justin Kern. “They both did a great job today of backing up the players in front of them so we had the confidence to go take care of business.”
The Generals now prepare for another doubleheader on Sunday with a morning matchup against the Springfield Pics at 8:50am EST followed by an evening game against the Beijing Shougang Eagles at 4:40pm EST. Both games will be broadcasted live by HockeyTV from the NewEngland Sports Center.
