The Arizona State Sun Devils (7-4-0) downed the Eugene Generals (3-7-1) by a final score of 2-1 on Thursday night at The Rink Exchange in Eugene, Oregon.
Facing off for the only time this season, the Generals and Sun Devils took the ice in front of a crowd eager to see the most anticipated collegiate matchup of Eugene’s schedule this season.
That excitement was quickly greeted with a harsh dose of reality when the elder Sun Devils took the game’s first lead with just 15 seconds off of the clock as Marcus Valvur buried a two-on-one opportunity to earn his team-leading 7th goal of the season and put Arizona State ahead, 1-0.
It would become 2-0 less than five minutes later as another two-on-one opportunity paid dividends for the Sun Devils with Brett Charron finishing off a feed from Elden Brower, but that capped the scoring for the first period as the Generals began to find their footing in the period’s final ten minutes of play.
The second period saw that trend continue as the young Generals held a potent Sun Devil attack at bay while increasingly generating chances of their own, and the score remained 2-0 heading into the third period.
Eugene's hard work finally yielded results at the 15:10 mark of the third period as Generals captain Jack Thornton capped off a mad scramble in front of the Sun Devil net by tapping home a loose puck in the crease, cutting ASU’s lead to 2-1.
Thornton’s goal would be the last for either side, though, as despite a late power play opportunity in the game’s final 34 seconds of play, Eugene was unable to beat ASU goaltender Bryce Andrashie again and the Sun Devils held on for the 2-1 win.
Generals goaltender Jamie Frantz was stellar between the pipes on Thursday night stopping 43 of 45 shots faced.
Eugene will now enjoy two weeks off to prepare for the upcoming Islanders Hockey Club Showcase where they will face the Charlotte Rush, Jersey Shore Whalers, Hampton Roads Whalers, Boston Bandits, and Atlanta Junior Knights.
Meanwhile, the Sun Devils will continue their stay in Eugene with a two-game series against the Oregon Ducks scheduled for Friday and Saturday night at The Rink Exchange. Game time is set for 7:00pm PST for both games between the Ducks and Sun Devils, and tickets will be available at the door.
