Western Washington Wins Opener Of Weekend Series

The Eugene Generals (3-5-0-1) suffered a 3-1 loss to Western Washington University (5-1-1) on Friday night at the Bellingham Sportsplex in Bellingham, Washington in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The night started on a promising note for the Generals as forward Frazier "Butch" Mohler opened the scoring less than seven minutes into the game to give Eugene a 1-0 lead.

That proved to be the only goal of the first period, and the Generals continued to hold the one-goal advantage until just past the midway point of the second period as WWU's Alex Stoneham leveled the score at 1-1 off an assist from Jack McCallum, a former youth hockey teammate of Generals defenseman Jackson Baughman (Santa Rosa Flyers).

The strike by Stoneham set up a tense final twenty minutes just south of the Canadian border, but Western Washington's Lucas Fantin took little time to break that tension as he scored at the 3:14 mark of the third period to give the Vikings their first lead of the game, and WWU's Iver Jackson followed just 25 seconds later to put the Vikings ahead by two.

Penalties prevented the Generals from ever regaining a grasp on the game as Eugene spent more than eight minutes of play on the penalty kill in the third period, effectively killing any chance of a comeback against WWU as the Vikings held on for the 3-1 win.

Goaltender Jamie Frantz took the tough-luck loss in net as the Generals record against collegiate opponents fell to 1-1-0-1 this season.

The two-game series between the Generals and Vikings concludes on Saturday at 7:00pm PST at the Bellingham Sportsplex in Bellingham, Washington.
