Eugene Downs Daytona To Cap Chicago Showcase

The Eugene Generals (3-4-1) wrapped up the Chicago Showcase in style as they defeated the Daytona Racers by a final score of 6-2 on Saturday evening at Canlan Ice Sports in Romeoville, Illinois.

Playing in the team’s fifth overall game in three days, the Generals aimed to bounce back after suffering a 4-1 loss to the Florida Eels earlier in the day.

Veteran defenseman Nash Berkowitz started the scoring against the Racers in the first period as he teed up a shot from the blue line that beat Daytona goaltender Nolan Hawkes to give Eugene the early 1-0 lead. It became 2-0 just minutes later as fellow defenseman Jackson Baughman ripped a shot from the point that would double Eugene’s advantage, but Daytona answered with a goal of their own to cut Eugene’s lead back to one heading into the intermission.

That would be the closest that Daytona would get, though, as Eugene native Calvin Hennon regained the two-goal cushion for the Generals by banging home a loose puck in front of the net to make it a 3-1 game.

A fortunate bounce helped make it 4-1 as a shot from the point deflected off of the shin pad of William Wallace and into the Daytona net, and Generals captain Jack Thornton followed Hennon’s lead by also scoring a scrappy goal in front of the net to stretch Eugene’s lead to 5-1.

Daytona cut their deficit back to three goals with just over two minutes left in regulation, but Generals forward Alex Clark would respond with a goal of his own to cap off the scoring and become the sixth different player to light the lamp for the Generals on the evening and finish off a 6-2 win for Eugene.

Goaltender Sean Leonard earned the win in net for the Generals, his first “official” junior hockey win after also picking up the win in Friday’s exhibition game against the Florida Eels.

The Generals now return home to Eugene where they’ll enjoy a bye week before hosting the Arizona State Sun Devils at The Rink Exchange on Thursday, October 26th at 6:00pm PST. Tickets are available online at

The next USPHL Showcase Series event on tap for the Generals is the I.H.C. Showcase on November 10-13 in Andover, Massachusetts.
