Eugene Outlasts Richmond For Dramatic Win

The Eugene Generals (2-3-1) netted their first win of the 2017 Chicago Showcase on Friday morning as they defeated the Richmond Generals (5-3-0) by a final score of 4-3 at the Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, Illinois.

After falling to the Potomac Patriots the day prior by a final score of 2-1, Eugene aimed to bounce back against a strong Richmond side that entered the morning fresh off of a 6-0 win over the Daytona Racers on Thursday afternoon.

As with all USPHL Showcase Series events, the game format for the USPHL Chicago Showcase includes two 25-minute periods as opposed to the traditional format of three 20-minute periods.

Eugene’s attack, which struggled to find its footing on Thursday, roared out of the gates on Friday as Frazier Mohler finished off a beautiful passing sequence by Eugene to take the early 1-0 lead.

Moments later, Alex Clark doubled the Eugene’s advantage as he netted his first-ever USPHL Showcase Series goal to make it a 2-0 game.

William Wallace do the same near the end of the first period as the Montanan skated wide before putting a backhanded shot on net that beat Richmond goaltender Luc Fox to put Eugene ahead 3-0, a lead they would carry into the intermission.

However, a five-minute major penalty levied against Eugene’s Blaine Krona at the tail end of the first period would carry over into the second period, and Richmond took full advantage as they netted a pair of goals with the man advantage to cut Eugene’s lead to 3-2 with over twenty minutes still left on the clock.

That would prove to be just a sample of what was ahead in the second period as both sides spent a healthy amount of time in the penalty box and asking for explanations from the head referee.

With tensions still simmering between the two sides, Eugene added some much needed insurance at the 10:58 mark as Frazier Mohler netted his second goal of the game, but yet another five minute major penalty, this time by defenseman Nash Berkowitz, meant that the Generals would be on the penalty kill for the final five minutes of regulation.

Seven seconds after the faceoff following Berkowitz’s major penalty, Richmond’s deficit was cut back to one as a Richmond skater would bury a golden opportunity from the high slot, setting up a frantic final five minutes in West Dundee with the Generals holding on to a 4-3 lead.

Richmond was unable to find the back of the net again, though, as Generals goaltender Jamie Frantz was superb in net to close out a dramatic 4-3 win for Eugene.

With the win, Eugene moves to 1-1-0 at the Chicago Showcase as they’ll now look ahead to an exhibition game against the Florida Eels on Friday evening at Canlan Ice Sports. The puck is scheduled to drop between the Generals and Eels at 2:50pm PST with live updates provided via Twitter.
