The Eugene Generals (22-6-1, 45pts) moved to 3-0-0 at the 2016 USPHL Midwest Showcase this afternoon behind a 3-2 overtime win over the Ironwood Yoopers (11-11-5, 27pts) at the Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, Illinois.
As in all USPHL Showcase Series events, every Midwest Showcase game includes two 25-minute periods with a five-minute overtime then a three-man shootout to follow if still tied.
For the third consecutive game, Generals forward Frazier Mohler opened the scoring as he gave the Generals a 1-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the game, however the 1-0 lead would last only three minutes as the Yoopers would quickly tie the game at 1-1.
Seven minutes later, the Yoopers took a 2-1 lead thanks to an excellent one timer, and the Yoopers would carry that one-goal advantage into the intermission.
In the second period, Ironwood continued to cling to their one goal lead for the majority of the second period as a handful of Generals scoring chances fell by the wayside, but defenseman Logan Sanders finally broke through as the team captain scored on a one-timer during a Generals power play to tie the game at 2-2, eventually leading to overtime.
In the overtime period, Generals forward Cole Bloemer came to the rescue as he scored off of a rebound in front of the net to seal a 3-2 win for the Generals. With the win, the Generals move to 3-0-0 at the 2016 Midwest Showcase after previously defeating the Alpena Flyers (5-2) and the Motor City Hawks (3-1).
Generals starting goaltender Christian Zecchetto stopped 36 of 38 shots in a stellar performance as he picked up his fourth win of the season.
After the game, an ecstatic yet relieved Generals Assistant Coach Daniel Gomez stated, "We have been blocking shots and killing penalties, both of which we struggled with last month. I'm very happy with the improvement that we've shown in those areas. I couldn't be prouder of the way that the boys battled to get the win tonight."
The Generals wrap up their schedule at the USPHL Midwest Showcase on Wednesday with a matchup vs. the Tri City Icehawks at 8:10am PST at the Leafs Ice Centre. Video coverage will be available via HockeyTV while live updates will be provided on Twitter.
