The Eugene Generals (21-6-1, 43pts) defeated the Motor City Hawks (14-9-2, 30pts) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 3-1 to move to 2-0-0 at the 2016 USPHL Midwest Showcase.
As in all USPHL Showcase Series events, every Midwest Showcase game includes two 25-minutes periods with a five-minute overtime then a three-man shootout to follow if still tied.
After earning the franchise's first USPHL Showcase Series win the night before, a 5-2 win over the Alpena Flyers, the Generals took the ice this afternoon against another Midwest Division foe, the Motor City Hawks. Entering the afternoon in second place within their division, the Hawks also earned a win in their Midwest Showcase opener, a 4-3 win vs. the Seattle Ravens on Sunday evening.
For the second straight day, Generals forward Frazier Mohler opened the scoring as the Arizona native handed the Generals a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. The Generals would hold their 1-0 lead over the next twenty minutes in a tight, physical game, but Hawks forward Evan Tarnopol tied the game at 1-1 just before the game's only intermission.
In the second period, the physical play continued as Generals goaltender Christopher Alexakis made a handful of fantastic saves to keep the score level at 1-1, including a key save on a deflection in front of the net during an extended power play for Motor City.
With the Generals on a power play of their own with just under ten minutes to go, Generals forward Baxter Cox regained the lead for the Generals with a scrappy goal after a scrum in front of the Motor City net.
Generals defenseman Logan Sanders would seal the game with just 96 seconds remaining to cap off a 3-1 win for the Generals on Day Two of the 2016 USPHL Midwest Showcase.
Generals goaltender Christopher Alexakis finished with 25 saves while earning his 14th win of the season.
After the game, Generals head coach Justin Kern was proud of his team, stating, "It was a fun an energetic game. The boys had to battle every step of the way and we got it done. We are very happy with the way we are playing, but we have to keep battling and see if we can grab a couple more wins while we're here."
The Generals' run at the Midwest Showcase continues on Tuesday as they face off against the Ironwood Yoopers at 12:20pm PST at the Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, Illinois. Video coverage will be available via HockeyTV while updates will be provided on Twitter.
