Sanders Named Team Captain

Defenseman Logan Sanders (Wasilla, AK) has been named Captain of the Eugene Generals for the 2016-17 season.

Entering his second season with the Generals, Sanders had already anticipated to be leaned on as the team's top D-man, no small praise with the team returning the core of last year's talented defensemen group, including Nash Berkowitz and Brett Sparks. As preseason practices and workouts arrived, Sanders quickly emerged as the obvious choice to wear the "C" on his sweater amongst coaches and teammates alike.

"Picking Logan as a captain was an easy choice," said Head Coach Justin Kern. "It's one of those things that just happens so naturally. When you're down there in the locker room with the guys and on the ice, you see who is vocal and who steps up, and Logan was always vocal with the team, always trying to help the new guys adjust to the junior lifestyle, and being a leader from the get-go."

"It's a role that I'm familiar with," says Sanders, "I've previously been a captain on some of my youth teams (Alaska Jr. Avalanche program) as well as my junior and senior years of high school (Colony High School), so it's a repsonsibility that I am comfortable with and really enjoy."

"What I'm looking for from Logan this year is when we as a coaching staff ask for something to get done, it gets done," added Kern. "Whether we're asking something of the rookies, the veterans, whoever; we know that Logan is going to be that guy to lead by example."

In addition, Cody Arbelovsky (Kenai, AK), also entering his second season, was named by Kern as the team's Assistant Captain.

Arby1The top returning scorer from last year's team, Arbelovsky will be counted on as a leader and goal-scoring threat.

The Generals still have one additional Assistant Captain spot open, a title Kern isn't going to award until it's earned. "I want to see who rises to the occasion this weekend," said Kern, "I want to see who is the vocal leader on the ice, how they carry themselves, and how they play in the game overall. In essence, I want to see a player jump off the page and grab that Assistant Captain spot for himself."

The Generals begin the 2016-17 regular season on home ice vs. the Tri-City Outlaws this Friday, September 16th at 7:30pm at The Rink Exchange.
