Generals Start Weekend With Loss

EUGENE, Ore. -The Eugene Generals (16-13-2) could not break the Southern Oregon Spartans (30-7-0) winning streak, as they lost 5-2.

The Generals took an early lead, but got too relaxed and let the Spartans back into the game.

Spartans player Christian McCollum started out the scoring tonight. McCollum streaked down the ice and sniped the top of the net at 1:07 into the first period.

The Generals responded to the Spartans goal by notching one of their own.

Generals forward Randy Ludwig had an opportunity to tie the game, but missed on a breakaway. He recovered the puck from his missed shot and threw it in front of the net, where Christian Merritt made easy use of scoring a goal. Merritt’s goal came at 4:23 into the first period.

Justin Huelsman gave the Generals the lead after he scored on a low shot through traffic that found its way into the back of the net after going through, Spartans goaltender, Derek Moser’s five-hole. Huelsman scored 13:48 into the period.

In the second period, the Generals where the first to strike, but the Spartans were the team to strike the most number of times.

Generals forward Cody Andersen took an across body shot on Moser, sniping Moser’s water bottle off of the net as he lit the lamp. Andersen’s goal came 4:50 into the second period.

Southern Oregon scored on an across-ice pass that caught, Generals goaltender, Gabriel Mier y Teran out of position. In a last attempt diving effort, Mier y Teran sprawled back across the net, but McCollum capitalized on Mier y Teran being out of position.

The Spartans scored again on a powe play goal from Mike Leskun, who scored at 15:42 of the second period.

Leskun scored for the second time tonight on a three-on-one break away. Leskun’s second goal came 18:13 into the second period.

The Generals were held scoreless in the third period.

Southern Oregon recorded the final goal of tonight’s game off of a shot from Nick DeSimone at 12:23 into the third period.

The final score read 5-3 Spartans.

The Generals and Spartans will travel to Medford, Ore., and rematch each other tomorrow night.
