Eugene OR - The Lane Ice Center has been close since this April for renovations of the rink and of the ice. The rink at one point during the summer was close to shutting its doors for good. The Lane County Commissioner wanted ice users to raise $40,000 to pay for the renovations of the rink and to keep it open for at least this season.
Now, with new ice installed and renovations around the rink are wrapping up the rink will reopen. The Eugene Generals will be the first group to use the ice when they practice on Monday September 13th. The Generals have spent the last two weeks doing dry land work and the team is ready to get on the ice.
"The players are excited about finally getting on the ice and practicing on Monday. The team has bonded off the ice and now they are ready to have their first practice on the ice," Assistant Coach Brent Seidel explained. "There is two weeks before the season starts and now we can implement our systems and get prepared for the Puget Sound Tomahawks on September 24."
The Generals enter this season with a new Head Coach in Chuck Kennedy and a new assistant in Brent Seidel. The Generals return 13 players from last seasons 38-10 roster. The returning forward are: Justin Huelsman, Kyle Kennedy, Ray Frianeza, Christian Merritt, Sean Park, Ryan McDonald, Brad Main and Stefan Veach. The returning defensemen are: Trevor Ruiz, Brendan Weimer, Connor Bambico and Jordan Blake-Jones. Mario Retana is the only veteran goaltender.
The Generals have some rookies that they expect to contribute to this season's team. The rookie forwards are: Kirby Carlson, Patrick Moodie, Nick Monteferrante, Justin Gregory and Evan Carter. Peter Martin is the lone rookie defenseman so far on the roster. The Generals have two rookie goaltenders in Matt Bartels and Corey Grummick.
The wait and uncertainty is over, now it is time for the 2010/2011 Eugene Generals to prepare to reach their goals of a Cascade Cup Championship. That goal starts on Monday.
