The Eugene Generals (15-6) are now all alone in second place after two wins this weekend against the Coeur d’Alene Lakers (3-18) in Post Falls, ID. The Generals beat the Lakers 4-2 on Friday, and backed it up with a dominating 7-2 performance on Saturday. The wins coupled with a Puget Sound upset over Tri-City on Saturday, and a Tri-City upset over River City on Sunday gave the Generals sole possession of second place in the NORPAC Pacific Division.
“We’re finally .500 on the road after the two wins this weekend,” Generals Head Coach Chris Hartly stated. “I was really happy with the win on Saturday, but we didn’t play our best hockey on Friday. I’m still happy we were able to come away with the win on Friday, but we needed to put the game out of reach early.”
The Generals did have some difficulty pulling away from the Lakers. Michael Frei was able to put a puck in the net in the first period, but the Generals didn’t get another goal for over thirty minutes. The Lakers were up 2-1 with a little over fifteen minutes left in the third when the Generals turned up the heat. Justin Adams, Brendan Elkins and Justin Mongrain scored in the third period to give the Generals a 4-2 victory.
The Generals were out-shot 43-41 in the contest, but Generals goaltender Nolan Ohmart saved 41 shots in the second start of his Junior career. Ohmart was rewarded with the start on Saturday as well, and was able to stop 27 of the 29 shots he faced.
The Generals were able to pump in seven goals on 31 shots on Saturday; five of them unanswered in the second and third periods. Michael Frei and Justin Adams both continued on their hot streaks. Frei scored three goals and had two assists on the weekend, and Justin Adams added three goals and an assist. Frei has now bumped up to third on the Generals with 26 points in only ten games, and Justin Adams continues to lead the Generals with 47 points.
The Generals will travel to Bremerton, WA for games this Friday at 12:00 PM and Saturday at 7:35 PM against the Puget Sound Tomahawks (7-12). The games will be broadcast on GiTV in audio only. For more information on upcoming games or GiTV please visit eugenegenerals.com.
