The NORPAC Pacific Division third place Eugene Generals (33-13) were able to get their first two wins of the 2007-08 NORPAC Regular Season against playoff bound teams on the road this weekend in Beaverton, OR against the fourth place River City Jaguars, and in Pasco, WA against the second place Tri-City Titans. The Generals finished with a 2-10 record against playoff teams on the road, but the win in Pasco was huge for the Generals considering they will be facing the Titans in the first round of the 2008 NORPAC Pacific Division Playoffs.
“We struggled on Saturday night against the Jaguars, but were able to pull out of that little slump with a win on Sunday against the Jaguars and on Monday against the Titans,” Generals Head Coach Chris Hartly stated. “The two wins were really important for us to get out of the way before the playoffs start. We have a tough weekend coming up, however, and our focus will be solely on the Seattle Totems until the final whistle blows on Saturday night.”
The Generals had their tenth consecutive loss on the road on Saturday night against the Jaguars. The Generals were defeated 4-2, and had their first three game losing streak of the season. The Jaguars scored two shorthanded goals in the victory, which was the seventh and eight shorthanded goals the Generals had given up in their last three games. River City was able to execute the game plan, and the Generals weren’t able to penetrate Viktor Tuurala, who had 45 saves on the night.
The Generals looked like a completely different team on Sunday night. The Generals scored three powerplay goals en route to a 4-1 victory. The win put the three game losing streak to rest, as well as their ten game losing streak on the road against playoff teams. The win forced a tie in the Generals/Jaguars season series, and kept the Generals from losing their first season series of the season. Kevin Aslett earned his tenth win of the season, stopping 32 of the 33 shots he faced. The win against the Jaguars was also the Generals 32nd win this season, which is a new Generals franchise record for wins in a season.
The Generals were able to get their second season series tie, and their second win against a playoff team on the road, in a 6-3 victory over the Titans on Monday. Tyler Tymchuk and Justin Adams each had a goal and two assists in the win, and Kevin Aslett stopped 42 of the 45 Titans shots. Justin Adams earned his 99th, 100th and 101st points this season, and he became the first member of the Generals to record 100 points in a season. This could be the most important win for the Generals this season, as they will face the Titans in the first round of the playoffs. A win against the Titans on the road might have shown the Generals what it takes to beat them in their own bard, and could make the difference in the first round.
The Generals will end their regular season this Friday and Saturday at 7:35 against the first place Seattle Totems. Saturday night is Fan Appreciation Night presented by Ronald McDonald House Charities®. The games will be broadcast on GiTV.
