Two of the inaugural season Eugene Generals were notified last week that they were selected to play for Team West at the USA Inline Hockey 2006 National Junior Festival to be held June 8-11, in Monument, CO, at the Soc n’ Roll Sports Arena. Larry Dankenbring and Lucas Romero were two of ten skaters selected to play on Team West. Dankenbring and Romero beat out more than 80 skaters to earn the privilege of playing for the pre-tournament favorites Team West.
“I think we’ll do well at the Festival,” Lucas Romero stated. “Inline is traditionally a West Coast sport, so we have to be the favorites.” That traditional expectation could bring added pressure for some, but not Romero. “I just think it’s a great opportunity to showcase my skills. I have all the confidence in the world in my team, and I think we’ll go to Colorado and take care of business.” This confidence is what made Romero so strong for the Generals down the stretch last season, and should prove to be just as crucial for Team West at the National Junior Festival.
The 2006 National Junior Festival will give Romero and Dankenbring a chance to compete against the best inline players in the country. The Festival is one of the premier amateur tournaments in the United States and only 48 players are selected to play. “To make the team is an honor, but to make it with Larry [Dankenbring] makes it all the more meaningful,” said Romero. “It’s great to have him on the team, and we hope we can represent the Generals as duel sport athletes at the top of our game.”
“I worked really hard at the camp, and it feels great to be chosen,” Dankenbring said. “It feels even better to have someone I know on the team, and especially because Lucas [Romero] is one of my good buddies.” The tandem should stand out at the Festival with their inline experience, and their time shared on the ice. “I think we’ll take first,” Dankenbring stated, “and I think Lucas and I will be a great combination.”
A minimum of four players from the National Junior Festival will have the chance to tryout for the 2006 USA Hockey InLine National Team that will represent the United States at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation InLine Hockey World Championships.
