The Eugene Generals will start the defense of their 2005-06 NOR PAC Western Division Championship tomorrow night at 7:35 at Lane Events Center-Ice. This game will mark the first of their 44 regular season games. The Generals open their first home-stand of the season against the River City Jaguars tomorrow night, and face the Jaguars again at 7:35 on Saturday. The Generals captured the Western Division title last year, but are in no way satisfied with that result.
“Sure we were able to win the Western Division title last year, and that’s great for a first year team, but we don’t play to finish second,” Generals Head Coach Chris Hartly stated. “I feel great about the team I’m putting out on the ice. We were written off a little at the beginning of last season, but I don’t think teams will make that mistake twice. We will have to give it all its worth every time we step on the ice.”
The Generals are putting a great team on the ice; bringing back 17 players from the 2005-06 season who went 6-1 against the Jaguars last season, and 6-0 in their last six meetings. In those seven meetings the Generals put up 44 goals to the Jaguars 15, 8 of which were in the first meeting of the season. The Jaguars, on the other hand, are only returning 10 players from their ninth place NOR PAC finish last season.
The Generals will be retiring the number 15 in remembrance of the former Generals Head Coach Robert Freeland who passed away during the off-season. Along with retiring Coach Freeland’s number, the Generals will be lifting their Western Division Championship banner. These two events should bring a lot of emotion to both sides. The entire Jaguars coach staff, and some players, were great friends of Coach Freeland. These emotions should make for two very exciting games that shouldn’t be missed.
