The Eugene Generals announced their assistant coach for the 2006-07 season. The Generals released earlier today that Colorado native Jay Miller would step into the position for the coming season. Miller, the current president of the Eugene/Springfield Referee’s Association, will be moving into the position that was recently vacated by Generals Head Coach Chris Hartly. “I’m really looking forward to my tenure with the Generals,” Miller stated. “The Generals have the reputation of being first-class both on and off the ice, and I hope that I can add to that reputation.”
“I was looking for someone with well rounded hockey knowledge, and previous coaching experience,” Coach Hartly said. “Jay fit into the expectations in both categories, and was also a local guy that would be easy to incorporate into our program.”
Miller does have previous coaching experience, and at a variety of different levels. Miller has coached Pee Wee AA, Midget AA, and was a consultant/assistant coach for the Midget AAA hockey team in Arvada, CO. This was not Miller’s only experience in hockey, however. He, in fact, comes from hockey family, but not in the traditional sense.
“My father has been a referee at every level of hockey,” Miller exclaimed. “He’s been a referee in the NHL, in the Olympics, various levels of minor pro, and is currently a referee for the CHL in Colorado.”
Miller followed in fathers footsteps, somewhat, but has broadened his knowledge in a variety of different ways. Miller played for the Colorado University’s ACHA Division II hockey program for two years, where he was also the president. The first year Miller was with the Buffaloes they won the ACHA Division II National Championship. “I know what it takes to get to that level,” Miller stated. “The Generals were one game away from the National Tournament last year, and I hope I can help to bring the team to that next level.”
Only time will tell if Miller will help get the Generals to the next level, but it appears that the Generals have taken one more step to making that dream a reality. For more information on Generals Assistant Coach Jay Miller please visit www.eugenegenerals.com.
