The Eugene Generals started the Winter Showcase on a winning note as they netted a 4-0 win over the Syracuse Stars on Saturday morning in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
Playing the first of five games over three days, the Generals showed little signs of fatigue in their showcase opener after making the cross-country trip the day prior.
After an even first five minutes, Eugene leading-scorer Alex Clark sniped home a one-time time pass from a tough angle to put the Generals ahead, 1-0, at the 19:07 mark.
Nathan Leach doubled the score with just under six minutes left in the period by channelling his inner baseball player and swatting a loose puck out of midair past Stars goaltender Anthony Mazzoni.
In the second period, William Wallace netted his fourth goal of the season off a hard wrist shot in the slot that rang off the Syracuse post and into the net to extend Eugene’s lead to 3-0.
Defenseman Kenneth Griffin saved the biggest roar for last as the veteran assistant captain buried his first-career junior hockey goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to send the Eugene bench into a frenzy while capping an impressive 4-0 win.
Generals goaltender Christopher Alexakis stopped all 21 shots faced to earn his first shutout of the season as the Generals outshot the Stars, 37-21.
Following the game, Generals Head Coach Justin Kern was pleased with his team’s effort following a long day of travel. “With all of the crazy weather, it was a rough time getting our team out here,” said Kern, “but the boys did a good job putting that chaos behind them and executing today’s gameplan.”
Eugene will complete Saturday’s doubleheader with a matchup against the Jersey Shore Whalers at 5:20pm EST at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Massachusetts. It will be the second time the two teams have face off this season, the first of which was a 3-1 win for Eugene at the I.H.C. Showcase in November.
