The Eugene Generals added one more moment to remember in their inaugural season Saturday night in Pasco, WA. The Generals defeated the Tri-City Titans 4-1 to clinch the NOR-PAC Western Division (3-1), and earn them their first bid to the Cascade Cup Finals. “This was a great accomplishment for our team,” Generals Head Coach Robert Freeland stated. “We have to forget about the last series, though, and focus on the task at hand, which is the Queen City Cutthroats.”
After a 5-4 overtime scare the night before, the Generals knew they would have to come out hard and maintain their intensity for the entire game. The Generals did come out hard, out shooting the Titans 21-8 in the first period, and leaving the first period with a 1-0 lead. Justin Kern scored his first goal of the playoffs to give the Generals the lead. The Titans would fire right back, however, scoring on a power play three minutes into the second. That goal would not faze the Generals. Garrett Bossert, in his second game of the playoffs, scored 9:56 into the second to give the Generals the lead for good.
The third period started out with a bang for the Generals. Tri-City native, Alex Ironside, won the first face off of the period to NOR-PAC leading scorer, Kris Kranzky, who carried the puck down the ice and fired a shot over the shoulder of the Titans goaltender, ten seconds into the period, to give the Generals a 3-1 lead. The score would remain the same for the majority of the period. In a last ditch effort, Tri-City pulled their goalie, Tim Potter, with 2:38 in the third. Trevor Johnson would capitalize with 1:04 to go when he slid the puck from center ice into an empty Titans net.
The Generals will face the defending champion Queen City Cutthroats in the Cascade Cup. The first two games of the series will be in Eugene Friday, March 10 at 7:35, and Saturday, March 11 at 7:35.
