Eugene, OR – The Eugene Generals will travel to Helena, MT this Thursday for the Cascade Cup finale against the Queen City Cutthroats.
The Generals evened the series at one a piece Saturday night in a spectacular 4-1 victory. The series that started out best of five has now transformed into a best of three. The first team to capture two victories in Helena will be crowned the Cascade Cup Champions, a title that the Cutthroats currently hold, and earn a bid to the Junior B National Championships in Philadelphia, PA. “We’ve gone through some rough patches this year, but every time our boys have been in a must win situation they have pulled it out,” Generals Head Coach Robert Freeland stated. “All we have to do is get two more wins, and I have all the confidence in the world that if our team plays to the best of its ability we will come away champions.”
The Generals and Cutthroats have now met five times this season. The Generals have come away with every win except for the 4-2 loss in the first game of the finals. The three wins during the regular season didn’t phase Queen City in that first game; however, as they out-hustled the Generals to take a 1-0 series lead. As it has been throughout the playoffs, the loss awoke the sleeping giant inside of the Generals. The Cinderella team from Eugene completely turned the tide during the must-win second game, and was able to come away with a convincing 4-1 victory to tie the series.
The Generals do appear to have the momentum heading into game three in Helena, but a long bus trip for the Generals and a rowdy crowd supporting the Cutthroats, could give the advantage back to Queen City. In the first two games, the team that has won the battles to the puck, and outworked the other team, has won each game. It will be crucial for the Generals to dig deep and find every ounce of energy to outwork the Cutthroats. If the Generals do outwork Queen City the advantage has to go to Eugene.
