Lehigh Valley Holds Off Late Comeback Effort By Eugene
The Lehigh Valley Jr. Rebels held on for a 3-2 win over the Eugene Generals (2-4-0) on Friday afternoon in Whitehall, Pennsylvania.
Friday afternoon's matchup was the second game in less than twenty-four hours for the Generals after falling to the New Jersey 87's, 4-2, on Thursday afternoon in Middletown, New Jersey.
Thursday's frustrations carried over into the first period of Friday's action as Lehigh Valley lit the lamp three times in the game's opening twenty minutes to carry a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
After a scoreless second period for both teams, Eugene began mounting a comeback in the third period starting with captain Jackson Baughman's first goal of the season at the 13:27 mark, a routine finish from the low slot after a Jared Coday shot redirected off of a Lehigh Valley player and right to the tape of Baughman's stick.
The Generals cut their deficit to one goal just past the midway point of the third period when first-year forward Justyn Bayliffe scored his first career junior hockey goal on a one-time finish off an assist from Cody Arbelovsky to set up a tense final ten minutes in Pennsylvania.
The tension ramped up even more in the waning moments of the game when Lehigh Valley's Daniel Herrle drew a five-minute major penalty to put the Generals on the power play, but Jr. Rebels goaltender Chad Simmerman was not beaten again as he helped seal a 3-2 win for Lehigh Valley.
Eugene now looks ahead to the team's final game of the current East Coast swing when the Generals travel to Aston, Pennsylvania to take on the Philadelphia Little Flyers on Saturday at 2:15pm EST.
The Eugene Generals Hockey Network (EGHN) will aim to provide live, free video coverage of Saturday's game pending facility accommodations.
